Whether you’re into swimming, hiking, boating, or simply lounging in the sand, Metro Detroit offers a variety of outdoor escapes that suit every interest. From scenic trails and expansive lakes to splash pads and adventure golf, these destinations are perfect for families, adventurers, and nature lovers alike.

Belle Isle Park

99 Pleasure Drive, Detroit

No list of Detroit-area beach destinations would be complete without mentioning Belle Isle Park. This island gem provides an unmatched city-meets-nature experience. “Belle Isle Beach is the only way to access the open water within the City of Detroit, and offers stunning views of the downtown skyline in the distance, making it a hugely popular destination for millions of families every summer,” shares Meagan Elliott, President and CEO of the Belle Isle Conservancy. “In recent years, we gave a group called the ‘Belle Isle Swim Club’ that gathers before work every Friday morning to have coffee and bagels on the beach, connect with friends, and wade into the water before heading off to work.” Beyond the shores, this park is full of sights, ranging from the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory to the Belle Isle Aquarium, the oldest aquarium in the country.
